Wayne Tully, the CEO of the National Driver Training Institute , a non-profit organization and author is a national expert on driver education and training.
As founder of NDTI, Tully developed the nation's first graduated driver licensing (GDL) program Help for the Teenager Who Wants to Drive. This program has served as a guideline across the country aiding lawmakers in creating effective teen driving laws and parent -taught driver education.
Because of his experience and knowledge, Tully is frequently asked to educate lawmakers across the nation about parental involvement in the driver education process. He has served as an expert witness testifying before the State House of Representatives and the Senate for various states on improving results for GDL and parent-taught driver education. He has co-authored, supplied witnesses, and/or financially supported a change in driver education and training laws in twenty-eight states. Each of those twenty-eight states carries a victory for parents and teens. This last year, Tully, one of twenty-eight people chosen from around the world to address the National Traffic Safety Board in Washington, D.C. on the effectiveness of Parent Taught Driver Education.
Completely reinventing the format of driver's education, the program advances students based on a perfect performance and the ability to meet appropriate requirements for each of the seven levels. The program also requires a minimum of 50 supervised driving hours and 30 hours of classroom time. The classroom time is not limited to studying in a book, but rather, offers practical activities ranging from learning to change a flat tire to researching the cost of insurance once a student receives a driving infraction.
Tully believes that the strict requirements and the amount of time it takes to complete the program is the correct formula to allow students to develop mature attitudes, beliefs and skills when they are granted the privilege of driving.
Compared to other programs, some might feel the program is too strict, but Tully questions, “what part are you willing to let the student misunderstand?” He explains, “each item we cover is aimed at keeping the student from getting in a crash.”
In addition to publishing his own material, Wayne has spoken on more than 150 live radio shows, and is a popular commentator in the media for stories related to teen driving laws.
A Native of Illinois, Tully spent most of his life in the Los Angeles area. He currently resides in Monument, Colorado with his wife, Jody and their youngest son, Tristan.
