Fill up often: The lower your gas level, the more your fuel can evaporate. You will get better gas mileage if you fill up at a quarter of a tank rather than at empty. Also, top off your tank during the cooler hours of the day. As the day heats up, the gasoline will expand and take up more volume. If you fill your tank in the morning or evening, you get slightly more fuel for your dollar.
Keep a regular service schedule: Change your oil and check your filters every 3000 miles (your vehicle owner's manual specifies appropriate services and when they should be performed). Dirty filters, spark plugs, and fluids will reduce your fuel efficiency.
Take care of your tires: Your vehicle owner's manual will specify the appropriate tire size and tire pressure for your vehicle. Normal tire pressure for radial tires is 35 psi (pounds per square inch). Reduced tire pressure will cause your car to burn more gas and could put you at risk for a blowout. Misaligned wheels, worn brakes, and worn bearings can cause up to a 10% reduction in fuel economy.
Start and stop smoothly: Racing your engine and slamming your brakes not only cause unnecessary wear and tear, they also waste fuel. By starting smoothly, maintaining your speed, and stopping smoothly, you will make your gas, and your car, last longer.
Avoid air-conditioning when possible: Your air conditioner uses a lot of gasoline. You can improve your fuel economy by using the “max ac” option (if you have one) or by simply driving with your windows open. The “max ac” function circulates the cold air in your car and does not require as much energy to cool the air. The drawback of both “max ac” and open windows is greater noise.
Drive light: Hauling extra weight in your trunk, truck bed, or back seat causes your car to burn more gas. A light trunk can help prevent a light wallet.
Plan your driving: Frequent short trips and stop-and-go traffic will decimate your fuel economy. Plan your driving outside of peak traffic times and try to create a route that will take the shortest distance to accomplish all of your goals.
