Implied consent, zero tolerance, use and lose laws

Drinking and driving has become such a problem that specific laws have been enacted to deter the public from committing this dangerous act. Let's look specifically at three of these laws:

Implied consent— essentially, this law states that by the very act of driving a car, you consent to a breath or blood test to determine if alcohol or drugs are present in your body. Driving the car implies that you will submit to a test if required by a police officer. Your implied consent allows the state to impose penalties on you if you refuse to submit to a test. If you refuse, your license will be immediately suspended for seven days and may be suspended for one year, whether or not you are convicted of driving under the influence. If you are convicted of DUI, the suspension period for refusing the test will be added to the DUI revocation period.

Zero Tolerance— these laws imply no leeway for those who violate them. The State of Virginia will not tolerate minors who drink and drive. Since the age to legally drink is 21, if you are under 21 and you drink and drive, you are susceptible to penalties and limitations beyond those for adults. If you are under 21 and drive with a BAC of at least 0.02 percent, but less than 0.08 percent, you can be fined up to $500 and have your driver's license suspended for six months. You also face a possible jail term for driving while intoxicated.
Use and Lose—this law states that anyone age 13 to 17 who violates laws regarding possession, consumption, and/or distribution of drug/alcohol, curfews, delinquency, possession and/or use of firearms, will automatically lose his license.
