For making a proper lane change, you should follow these steps:
Check the mirrors to ensure traffic is clear. If another car is too close on the left or right, you might want to wait until the adjacent lanes are clear before attempting the lane change. Remember that accidents happen because of interruptions in traffic flow. Waiting until the other lane is clear helps keep traffic flowing smoothly.
When traffic is clear, or you can't wait any longer for traffic to clear, signal your intentions by turning on the indicator. Other drivers will often adjust to let you in. DO NOT FORCE YOUR WAY INTO ANOTHER LANE! If traffic will not allow you to safely change lanes, travel to the next available exit or turn. A few extra minutes is not worth the risk of a collision.
After you are sure that adjacent traffic has had enough time to notice the turn indicator, give a head check by looking over your shoulder in the area of the blind spot.
If clear, smoothly move the vehicle into the adjacent lane. When passing another vehicle during this maneuver, move back into the lane only after the entire front end of the car just passed can be seen in the rearview mirror.
