Prescribed and over-the-counter medications

Prescribed and over-the-counter medications

Over 300,000 different drugs are sold over the counter. Many of them contain alcohol or other substances that cause drowsiness and fatigue. No matter what kind of medicine you are using, as a driver, you must read the warning label before taking the medicine and operating a vehicle. If you are warned against using heavy machinery, do not drive.

Prescription Medications —while there are hundreds of thousands of prescription medications and a few of them may not affect driving, it is very important that you read warning labels and avoid driving when it is prescribed with the medication. Prescription medications may fall into one of the three categories below, in which case you must not drive:

Tranquilizers— Valium, Halcyon, and Librium are examples of this category. They have effects similar to those of alcohol, and this can dull the senses and cause driving task misjudgments.

Stimulants— although they provide extra energy some stimulants are not suitable for those planning to drive. Negative effects may include hallucinations, paranoia, increased distractibility and over-reliance to ward off fatigue.

Narcotics— narcotic drugs, such as codeine, dull the senses and may produce inattention to driving.

Remember, any change a drug produces may also lessen driving ability. Drugs should never be mixed with each other or with alcohol because the reaction of the combination may be greater than that of either drug alone. This is called a synergistic effect.
