The list below is an easy procedure for securing your vehicle:
Stop in a legal, secure parking space - be sure to center your vehicle in a designated parking space and park 6 to 8 inches from the curb when parallel parking. Check around the vehicle to be certain not to park too close to rail road crossings, fire hydrants, intersections, etc. The driver should bring the vehicle to a complete stop and keep the brake pedal depressed until completion of the next two steps.
Set parking brake - this protects your transaxle and constant velocity joints, especially if you park on a slanted surface.
Place gear selector in (P)ark - vehicles with manual transmission may require that you place the gear selector in (N)eutral.
Turn off any accessories used - lights, radios, air conditioning, windshield wipers and other accessories should be left off when the vehicle is off. Some accessories can use battery charge even when the vehicle is off. While turning accessories off, mentally note if each of the accessories functions properly.
Secure windows - modern vehicles with electric windows require you to adjust the windows while the engine is on. Bring your windows up completely or with no more than ¼ inch gap (on hot days) to protect your valuables.
Turn ignition switch to “off” - this should shut off your engine and de-power all systems.
“Lock” ignition and remove key - most vehicles will require you to lock the ignition to remove the key. Develop a habit of always removing the key. Never leave your keys in your car. In some states this is illegal. In all states it is an invitation to theft.
Remove occupant restraints - release your safety belt. Some vehicles have a safety belt attached to a car door.
Check traffic prior to exiting vehicle - front, side, and rear before opening your door. If the “child lock” feature is activated on your passenger doors, you will need to open them from the outside.
Close and lock the doors - always verify that you have keys in hand before locking the door.
