Operation Lifesaver's Railroad Safety Course

Home Student Guide Introduction Video Quiz

Introduction

Ask yourself the following questions...
let's see how much you know about railroad safety!

1. Have you had any experiences involving railroad tracks? Walking on tracks? Playing around the tracks? Did you ever think it was dangerous?

2. Can you list some passive railroad signs IN ADVANCE of a railroad and AT a railroad crossing? How about active devices AT railroad crossings? Have you ever noticed the "NO TRESPASSING" signs around railroads and railroad equipment?

3. Did you know that all vehicles must yield the right-of-way to trains? Do you know how long it takes a train to stop? Miles? Minutes?

4. How can you judge a train's speed and distance? Have you ever noticed how an airplane that's about to land looks like it's slowly floating in the sky? Did you know it's actually moving at over 200 miles per hour?

5. Did you know that train traffic has been steadily increasing in the last ten years. Even more today than a few years ago, you should "Always Expect a Train" because freight trains do not travel on schedule, and passenger trains change schedules all the time.

6. We're about to watch a 12 minute video, but ask yourself this question before you start the movie: Have you (or someone you know) ever tried to beat a train by driving around lowered crossing gates? Has anyone ever walked on a trestle or bridge, ridden an ATV or a snowmobile on the tracks or taken a shorcut through a railroad yard?

7. It is extremely dangerous (really, you could die or kill someone) if you walk on tracks, over bridges or trestles, through tunnels or in railroad yards. These things are against the law and subject to arrests and fines. Trespassing on railroad property is also extremely dangerous.

8. Read the Student Notes before watching the video and taking the quiz that follows the video.
